Orthodoxy

Evolving Tradition

By David N. Bell

Orthodox Christianity—divided into two main groups: Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox—is now a world-wide phenomenon and one of the fastest growing Christian traditions in the United States. In this introduction to the tradition, the author presents "a reasonably wide-ranging account of modern Orthodox beliefs primarily for non-Orthodox readers," and by examining beliefs and attitudes common in the West, explores whether they can be accommodated to traditional Orthodox teachings. Includes an insert of icons in four-color! David N. Bell is Professor of Religious Studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Well known among Cistercian scholars for his studies of the Augustinian theology of William of Saint Thierry and the library holdings of medieval abbeys, he has also translated monastic works from Latin, Greek, and Coptic.

"The Spiritually Beneficial Tales of Paul, Bishop of Monembasia"

Paul, Bishop of Monembasia; Translated, with an introduction and commentary, by John Wortley

The 'spiritually beneficial tales' of Byzantine Christianity grew out of the desert Apophthegmata. Written at a time, and at a social level, not remarkable for its literary output, the spontaneous and often naive tales shamelessly despoil the common treasure-house of the tradition while creating a new genre of spiritual admonition. Here readers enter the spiritual world of Paul, tenth-century bishop of Monembasia, 'a place of no particular importance'. Through his eyes we see the monastic and ecclesiastical world of ordinary tenth-century eastern Christians.

The Monastic Rule Of Iosif Volotsky

New Revised Edition

Edited and Translated by David M. Goldfrank

The life and Rule of Iosif Volotsky (1439/1440-1515) reveal many of the contradictory forces at work within the medieval muscovite church and russian monasticism: social reform amid noble privilege, monastic austerity bounded by a despotic social structure. 'Non-possessor' reformers might advocate the renunciation of monastic villages and peasants universal manual labor, and hesychastic prayer, but Iosif defended liturgical formalism and the retention of lands and privileges as safeguards of monastic life. First published in 1983, this first English translation oF Iosif's rule has been revised to include in full both versions of Iosif's legislation: the Brief Rule and the Extended Rule. Bibliography and notes have also been expanded to incorporate new scholarship, some of it stemming from the recent remarkable revival of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Bearers Of The Spirit

Spiritual Fatherhood in the Romanian Orthodox Tradition

Nicolas Stebbing CR

Christians in various western traditions are re-discovering spiritual direction. Yet many have little experience of the living tradition of spiritual fatherhood. The book sets out to learn how Orthodox Christians understand and value their spiritual fathers. Both the people and the spiritual fathers who speak through these pages are part of an ancient tradition in a Church only recently emerged from decades of Communist harassment. While their experience of spiritual fatherhood is uniquely their own, it can be of help to all Christians who seek God by searching out a spiritual father, a bearer of the spirit who knows, and can help others to know, the living God. Nicolas Stebbing CR, a priest of the Community of the Resurrection, teaches at College of the Resurrection, Mirfield, Yorkshire and is engaged in retreat and ecumenical work.

A Life Pleasing To God

The Spirituality of the Rules of Saint Basil

Augustine Holmes, OSB

Basil the Great (330-379) is one of the most important figures in christian history and a theologian and spiritual teacher of ecumenical significance. At a time when the sources of their rich spiritual heritage are being re-appropriated by Christians of many traditions, it is strange that little attention has been given to basilian spirituality. A Life Pleasing to God tells the story of Basil's own spiritual development in the theologically turbulent fourth-century. Its core is a study of those passages of the Asceticon which illustrate his understanding of the foundation of the christian life and lay out the possibilities, and problems, of christian community.
